Hey Roeper you can't say "shit" in the Sun-Times but you can in your blog

Call it Roeper uncensored, on his blog today Chicago Sun-Times columnist Richard Roeper called out Joaquin Phoenix for his incoherent appearance on last night's Late Show With David Letterman.

From richardroeper.com:

Joaquin Phoenix is full of shit

Nearly every entertainer in the world is addicted to attention. I’m not saying they’re not primarily artists, but they’re also attention junkies. If you just want to act or play guitar or sing for the sake of expression itself, you can do so far away from the spotlight and the crowds. Even the “regular” stars who seem like normal people—Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman, Bruce Springsteen—-they walk the red carpets and they show up to accept trophies, and they thoroughly enjoy performing for mass audiences.

But when Hanks or Streep or Hoffman venture into the world on a daily basis, you get the sense they’d be perfectly happy if nobody recognized them, or, more realistically, folks didn’t bother them while they were having dinner or watching a ball game or walking down the street. They still want to have some semblance of a private life.

Not so with a Mickey Rourke, or an Amy Winehouse, or a Joaquin Phoenix.

In an industry filled with attention junkies, these people are attention whores, apparently incapable of receding into the background for even a moment. Not content to be noticed for their work, they turn their very beings into a pathetic form of performance art that screams, “LOOK AT ME!”
