BURLINGTON – A bull on its way to a slaughterhouse escaped its handlers and rampaged through downtown Burlington Thursday afternoon, charging at cars and running through a service station before police shot it to death in a nearby field.

According to Kane County Sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler, local business Reiser Trucking was loading the animal to take to a slaughterhouse when the bull got loose.

“Apparently he caused quite a bit of havoc in town,” Gengler said.

Service station worker Romaine Zukauski wasn surprised by the strange visitor.

Zukauski was working at the Burlington Oasis, 125 Plank Road, when the black bull walked up to the fuel pumps just feet from where she was standing inside.

"My boss and I were having a casual conversation, and then all of a sudden it was like, 'Oh, my God,'" Zukauski said. "That's not something you see every day."
